http://www.heritageflightfoundation.org/ The Grumman TBM-3 Avenger was a World War II combat aircraft saddled with the dangerous job of pushing through enemy fighter protection, delivering a barrage of gunfire and releasing a torpedo at "can't miss" range. The Avenger was well armed and well armored. Avengers were a part of every pivotal battle in the Pacific and by war's end, Avengers had sunk over 60 enemy ships. The Heritage Flight Foundation's "Block Island" Avenger was built in 1945, acquired by the Foundation in 2008 and underwent an aesthetic and mechanical restoration in 2009. This fantastic piece of military aviation history is hangared at Westerly State Airport in Westerly, RI and makes static display appearances at aviation and military history events as well as airshow performances and commemorative fly-bys. This amazing aircraft is operated by Chief Pilot, Mark Simmons. The mission of the Heritage Flight Foundation is to educate the public about World War II and the sacrifices made by the heroes of that generation. Their goal is to preserve aviation history with static displays in their museum facilities and with hands-on experience in the air. The Foundation delivers a truly unique and memorable educational experience. The Avenger has been restored to USS Block Island Marine colors and markings. The TBM-3E "Avenger" was one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. First seeing action at the Battle of Midway, the TBM became the workhorse of the United States Navy and Marines during the war and continued to fly operationally for the U.S. throughout the 1950's. |
